Ashwell and the Icknield Way. 25km in the snow

There were a few inches of snow on Thursday night around Letchworth (and most of the rest of the UK) and the weather on Saturday was perfect for a long, hard run. Although the temperature was about -2 or so the sky was clear and there was next to no wind, rarely are conditions so good. The marathon on Sunday has been cancelled so I decided to take a run out to Ashwell and then along the Icknield Way, turning back after about 90 mins.

In most places the snow was a couple of inches deep, but I did come across a few drifts which came up to above my knees and some stretches where the snow was 3 or 4 inches. There was however a lot of ice under the snow, especially where muddy trails have frozen. This made running next to impossible in some sections so pace was much lower than normal, in the end I was pacing 2/3rds or a bit less of my normal pace over those paths. My legs and back were very tired showing just how much additional effort goes into maintaining balance.

I ran in my Roclite 320s, the grip was perfect, even on the icy roads and although my feet were wet by the time I got back (the shoes are not waterproof) they were not at all cold.
