What book — fiction or non — touched you? Where were you when you read it? Have you bought or given away multiple copies?
This might be the easiest one to answer all month. I knew right away:

Three Cup of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. It was published…um, six years ago? For an English major, I suck at keeping up with the latest releases. I’d heard about this, and Greg Mortenson’s amazing mission, a few years back, but finally picked up a copy and read it a couple months ago. First of all, fantastically written. It doesn’t feel like a dry, non fiction news report. In a lot of ways, it reads almost like a novel — suspenseful, developed characters, and gripping. And completely inspiring and uplifting. If you haven’t read it yet, I could not recommend it more.
MY HALF-MARATHON IS SUNDAY. Wow. I cannot believe it came so fast! I signed up waaaay back in August, with the lofty goal of putting myself through 14 weeks of tough training and finishing under two hours. Well, that went out the window pretty quickly. I learned a lot about training and listening to my body post-injury and even though I wish I could hope for a more competitive experience for my first half, I’m so glad I’m doing it. I’m glad I’m stubborn and refused to give up when my hip started hurting, but found a way to continue training without overdoing it. And I’m glad I already have plans for working out after the race (starting with 2-3 days completely off except for some light yoga, then at least a month of easy-to-moderate cross-training, knee and hip strengthening exercises — think lots of lunges and squats — and weight-lifting, and lots more yoga before I even let myself think of lacing up my running shoes again). I’ve even already got next year loosely planned out in terms of races. Well, sort of.
The point is I’m excited. A little nervous, but they haven’t really hit yet — and hopefully won’t be too bad at all — because my goal is to FINISH. If it takes me less than two and a half hours, I’ll be pretty damn pleased with myself.
Driving to Vegas at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning!
